The municipality of Marilao  has basically an agri-based economy. Farming,  fishing, swine and poultry raising were the dominant  economic industries and livelihood of the natives of the town  prior to the influx of industries towards the end of the century. Structural change in the economy become evident  due to the rapid rate of urbanization characterized by increasing encroachment  of industries and manufacturing establishments on productive agricultural land of the municipality. Today, the municipality  is surely moving towards commercialization and industrialization as it is now becoming as  one of the centers  of trade and commerce not only in the province of Bulacan but also in this part of Luzon.

Marilao is indeed a very ideal investment destination. This is evidenced by the tremendous growth of industrial activities and the manufacturing sector in the recent years. . These provide employment to skilled and unskilled local residents as well as to its increasing  migrants. Marilao’s proximity to Metro Manila and accessibility attract investors, given the  low transport cost of raw materials and other finished products. Added to these, are a number of other reasons why Marilao is the place to invest such as highly productive human resources; abundant source of raw materials, well developed access roads, reasonable cost of production, effective and responsive local governance, attractive investment incentives and favorable peace and order situation as evidenced by  a low average monthly crime rate.

Food and beverage manufacturing  represents almost half of the total number of industries in the municipality, while metal products fabrication and textile, apparel and leather goods manufacturing constitute the other bigger percentage. Marilao also serves as a host to a number of private industrial estates which are located in barangays Lambakin, Loma De Gato, Patubig and Sta Rosa I

Marilao is also known for the puto at kutsinta which became popular because of the taste and its unique size and shape. It was the husband and wife tandem of Hilario Cruz and Clarita Raymundo who started it back in 1939. The putong puti, putong pula and cotchinta gained much popularity that they named it "popular", being sold not only in Marilao, but also to anyone who is enticed by others who have tasted it. The store grew and started to sell other native products, and was visited by prominent figures during the pre-war period like, Dona Aurora Quezon, Jose Yulo, national artist Fernando Amorsolo and Ireneo Miranda, among others.
